Fossil fuel (oil, coal & gas) companies have been driving the climate crisis and delaying action on climate change for decades. Join us in Hastings Old Town on Saturday 13 May for a carnivalesque, New Orleans marching jazz band funeral parade for these companies, to demand that East Sussex County Council stops investing local people’s pensions in these damaging and financially risky fuels. After all, it’s the fossil fuel companies funeral or ours!

Dress in black clothing if possible. No musical abilities required!

We also be collecting signatures in our “Condolence Book” (aka the Divest East Sussex petition).

ABOUT DIVESTMENT & THE GLOBAL DIVESTMENT MOBILISATION

Despite overwhelming evidence that burning fossil fuels (oil, coal and gas) is the leading cause of climate change, organisations around the world – including East Sussex County Council – continue to invest in fossil fuels despite the danger they pose to the planet.

From May the 5th to 13th 2017, thousands of people across across the world will be taking part in actions calling on universities, religious institutions and local government bodies to divest from fossil fuels, as part of a Global Divestment Mobilization called by 350.org.

Divestment aims to help break the hold that the fossil fuel industry currently has on our economy and our governments – and it’s already starting to happen. Over 680 institutions, managing over $5 trillion worth of assets, have already made some form of divestment commitment. They include the capital cities of France, Germany, Norway, Sweden and Denmark, over a quarter of UK universities in the UK, and many faith and medical institutions.

East Sussex County Council (ESCC) has an estimated £172m of local people’s pension monies invested in fossil fuels (oil, coal and gas) – investments that pose serious financial risks to investors.

Hastings Borough Council, Lewes Town Council and Brighton & Hove City Council have all agreed that ESCC should divest local people’s pensions from fossil fuels. You can add your voice to the call for divestment by signing the petition here: http://tinyurl.com/esccdivest
