Campaigners from around East Sussex have welcomed the news that Waltham Forest pension fund is to divest itself of its £23.9 million worth of investments in the oil, coal and gas industries [2]. The Fund, worth £735 million, will become the first UK Pension Fund to completely divest itself from fossil fuels. Divestment statement to the East Sussex Pension Committee

The following statement to the East Sussex Pension Committee was made by Julia Hilton on behalf of Fossil Free Hastings at the Committee’s 8 September 2016 meeting. For background info see here.

Thank you for allowing me to speak in support of the petition calling for the divestment of the East Sussex Pension Fund from fossil fuels.

COUNCILLORS & RESIDENTS CALL ON EAST SUSSEX PENSION FUND TO DITCH FOSSIL FUEL INVESTMENTS
Divestment campaigners to make presentation to Pension Committee this Thursday (8 September)

8 September, County Hall, Lewes: Campaigners calling on East Sussex County Council to ditch its investments in fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas) will address the East Sussex Pension Committee at its next meeting in Lewes, this Thursday (8 September) [2]. The appearance follows the hand-in of a petition, urging the County Council to divest the Pension Fund of its investments from fossil fuels, which was signed by over three hundred people from across East Sussex, including residents of Battle, Bexhill, Brighton, Eastbourne, Etchingham, Forest Row, Hastings, Heathfield, Hove, Lewes, Polegate, Seaford, St Leonards, and Uckfield [3].
